Get to Know Dr. Farrah
A Journey of Awakening and Purpose
Dr. Farrah® graduated from Saint Louis University with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2003, after completing her pre-medical training as a laboratory technician. She passed her board examinations on her first attempt, marking the beginning of her medical journey.
At the start of her career, Dr. Farrah devoted herself fully to conventional medicine. Like many young physicians, she was idealistic and believed that pharmaceutical medicine held the answers to humanity’s health challenges—because that was how she had been trained. Wanting to belong to a like-minded professional community, she immersed herself in hospital training programs, attended seminars, and studied medical research to refine her knowledge and skills.
Her late father, Antonio R. Agustin, was an esteemed herbalist. One day, he encouraged her to leave hospital training and join him on his journey. Although he was not a medical doctor and therefore did not formally attend to the sick, his wisdom and experience deeply influenced her. Dr. Farrah left Manila and worked alongside her father for 12 years.
In the early years of this transition, she remained hesitant to completely abandon pharmaceutical medicine, having devoted so many years to studying it. At that time, she combined synthetic drugs with herbs, vitamins, and minerals in her practice. She traveled abroad extensively to study natural medicine, investing many years and substantial resources to gain knowledge that was not available in her own country. It saddened her to realize that many progressive nations proudly showcased their own systems of natural medicine, while she had to rely on foreign protocols instead of promoting a truly native Filipino approach.
Over time, Dr. Farrah came to recognize that she had been blinded by the promises of conventional medicine. Her beliefs were fully challenged when her own family became ill. Despite following standard medical protocols, no drugs seemed to help. Their condition worsened daily, leaving her depressed and helpless. As a medical doctor, she could not understand why the treatments she trusted were failing.
She revisited medical textbooks and consulted colleagues, yet nothing alleviated her family’s illness. Eventually, after careful evaluation and in a moment of desperation, she turned to experimentation. Prescribing pharmaceuticals had become increasingly confounding due to side effects, drug interactions, and, in many cases, the absence of real results.
When questions arose during her practice, her professors and mentors often insisted that the issue lay in finding the “right combination” of drugs—yet none could offer definitive solutions. This ongoing misdirection led her to a pivotal realization when she encountered a statement by Dr. Allan Roses, former worldwide vice president of genetics at GlaxoSmithKline. He revealed that fewer than half of patients benefit from some of the most expensive drugs, and that more than 90 percent of drugs work in only 30 to 50 percent of people. At that moment, Dr. Farrah knew there had to be another way.
Her turning point came when she created a simple natural cough remedy using honey and cinnamon for her daughter. To her astonishment, her daughter’s cough disappeared by the second day. Shocked and deeply intrigued, Dr. Farrah wondered if the solution to conditions like asthma could be found in her own kitchen. She immediately sought out books on natural medicine, discovering a wealth of knowledge that opened her eyes as both a physician and a mother.
That day, she learned three life-changing lessons. First, honey and cinnamon are powerful antimicrobial foods with anti-inflammatory properties. Second, she realized she had been taught profit-based medicine rather than health-based medicine. Third, she felt as though she had been given the keys to an entirely new world. This awakening marked the beginning of her transformation.
As her understanding deepened, the intricate workings of the human body and its direct relationship to nutrition came into focus. These principles had been barely mentioned during her medical training, while pharmaceuticals had been relentlessly emphasized. The realization that medicine had been reduced to “a pill for every ill” left her disillusioned and ashamed. She recognized that her education had been shaped by pharmaceutical interests rather than patient health, and she made a defining decision to step away from ineffective synthetic medicines.
This period of helplessness became her greatest awakening. She often compares it to Dorothy Gale’s moment in The Wizard of Oz, stepping from a black-and-white world into vibrant color. Natural, nutrition-centered philosophies transformed her life.
